Fire Cider Recipe

Fire Cider is a traditional herbal tonic used for centuries to help support the immune system, especially during cold and flu season. This spicy, tangy concoction is packed with natural ingredients known for their antibacterial, antiviral, and anti-inflammatory properties. Here’s a simple recipe for making your own batch at home.

Ingredients:

  • Garlic (a few cloves)

  • Peppers (such as jalapeño or habanero, depending on spice preference)

  • Fresh ginger root

  • Onions (1-2 medium)

  • Fresh horseradish root

  • Fresh turmeric root (optional)

  • Black peppercorns

  • Lemons (1-2)

  • Herbs (like rosemary, chives, and thyme)

Additional Supplies:

  • Apple cider vinegar (enough to cover ingredients)

  • Large glass jar (do not use metal lids, as vinegar will cause rust)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Ingredients: Chop the garlic, peppers, ginger, onions, horseradish, and turmeric (if using) into small pieces. You don’t need to be precise; ensure they are small enough to fit into the jar.

  2. Layer the Ingredients: Place all chopped ingredients, black peppercorns, and herbs into a large glass jar. Layer them as desired to ensure an even distribution of flavors.

  3. Add the Vinegar: Pour apple cider vinegar over the ingredients until completely covered. Leave a little room at the top to allow for expansion.

  4. Seal the Jar: If possible, use a plastic or rubber lid, as metal can corrode from the vinegar. Alternatively, place a layer of parchment paper between the jar and a metal lid to prevent rusting.

  5. Steep the Mixture: Place the jar in a cool, dark place and allow it to steep for at least 6 weeks. This will allow the flavors to develop and the ingredients to infuse into the vinegar.

  6. Strain and Store: After 6 weeks, strain the mixture to remove the solid ingredients. Pour the liquid into a clean jar and store it in the refrigerator.

  7. Use as Needed: The spoonful can take Fire Cider as a daily tonic or add to teas, marinades, and dressings for an immune boost.

Note: Fire Cider is known for its strong flavor, so if you’re new to this tonic, start with small doses.
